Based in Nairobi, Wilmot brings over 20 years of experience as an emerging market investor, entrepreneur, transaction advisor, management consultant and political economist. He has experience in 30 countries in Africa and has worked across emerging markets in Asia, Latin America and the Middle East.
He was recently a management consultant to the African CDC and co-created the strategy, fundraising and operational plan for its new Africa Public Health Foundation (APHF). The APHF is the African institution leading the continent’s COVID-19 response. He served on the AU CDC COVID-19 Response Taskforce. His other roles in healthcare include management consultant to the R&D division of Allergan Pharmaceuticals and a clinical researcher with Proctor & Gamble. He is also a Venture Partner with RH Managers/Bophelo based in Johannesburg, a private equity fund investing in healthcare across Southern and Eastern Africa.
Wilmot is Founder and Chairman of VentureLift Africa (VLA), an investment advisory firm (VLA Capital Advisory) facilitating investment, trade, market entry and expansion for SMEs, startups and corporates. The company has a fintech and marketplace platform (VLA) for scaling African businesses through innovative financing and curated matches with Diaspora and other trade supply chains, technology transfer, talent, and advisory partners. VLA recently co-hosted the 2020 Diaspora Investment and Trade Deal Event with the MBDA Chicago Export Center, Chicago Minority Supplier Development Council, US Africa Development Foundation (Co-Sponsor) and other partners in September 2020. The event convened over 800 diaspora and allies in support of US-Africa commerce and yielded hundreds of potential deals.
He previously worked as the Director of East Africa with CrossBoundary LLC, leading the transaction advisory practice for East Africa from Nairobi. Under his leadership, this group served as the transaction team for a USAID Presidential Trade Africa initiative, the East Africa Trade and Investment Hub. The team facilitated over $120 million in closed transactions in two years with SMEs, corporates, investors and lenders and established the firm’s most successful advisory office.
Prior, in finance roles, Wilmot worked with the International Finance Corporation (IFC) in Washington DC, executing investments totaling over $300 million and managing a portfolio of $2.5 billion with the private equity and financial institutions groups. At the IFC, he was also Senior Advisor to the CEO Lars Thunell on entrepreneurship initiatives supporting SMEs in Africa, Asia and the Middle East, in conjunction with the World Economic Forum.
In other roles, Wilmot executed over $4 billion in combined transactions as a venture capital investor in women and minority-owned businesses with the Commonwealth Enterprise Fund in Boston, a technology M&A investment banker with JPMorgan H&Q to Silicon Valley and international companies in San Francisco, and a private placement and IPO investment banker with Merrill Lynch in New York.
In other affiliations with African institutions, Wilmot is a board member of Melvin March International (tea), Ludique Works (gaming and eSports), Popote Payment (former; fintech) and former trade consultant to the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA). He is a business coach and advisor to entrepreneurial ecosystems supporting startups and SMEs throughout Africa and in the U.S.
Wilmot has a PhD from Georgetown University in Comparative Political Economy, an MBA from the Wharton Business School, an MPA from Harvard University and BA from Yale University. Wilmot is a member of the National Association of Security Professionals, a former Robert Toigo Fellow and was selected as a Young Global Leader at the World Economic Forum.
